Oh yes, we haz them! If you like NeoPixel strips you'll love these 8mm diffused through-hole NeoPixels. All the single-pin-controlling-hundreds-of-LEDs goodness in a breadboard-friendly format. Each LED looks just like your classic through-hole 8mm RGB LED with 4 legs, but instead of just red/green/blue, there's a little chip inside that can control the LED with high-speed PWM for 24-bit colour.

Power them with 5V and chain them together, tying the Data-Out pin of one to the Data-in of the previous one in the chain. If you're using an Arduino, you can control these LEDs with our wonderfully written Neopixel library for Arduino. They also work great with our Trinkets. Note that these are "RGB" instead of the "GRB" format used in the 5050-sized LEDs you are so used to. Check in the NeoPixel example code for how to swap the colours automagically.

These great-looking LEDs are also fast and responsive with diffused colors that will make your project glow!

Specifications

LED Height: 11mm

LED Diameter (at base): 8mm

Length of Pins: 27mm

Weight: 0.8g

Resources

WS2812 Datasheet

SK6812 Datasheet

Neopixel Guide

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0734/2961/4819/files/neopixel-diffused-8mm-through-hole-led---5-pack_1.jpg?v=1787257205
adafruit-dotstar-high-density-8x8-grid-64-rgb-led-pixel-matrix
Adafruit DotStar High Density 8x8 Grid - 64 RGB LED Pixel Matrix

Do not eat this LED grid just because it is so colorful and bite-sized! This is the tiniest little LED grid we could make, with 64 full RGB color pixels in a square that is only 1" by 1" square (thats 25.4mm x 25.4mm for you metric-lovers). Best of all, these are little DotStar LEDs, with built in PWM drivers, so you only need two digital I/O pins to get a-glowin'.

But do not be fooled by their small size, each LED is still incredibly, blindingly bright just like the DotStars/NeoPixels you know and love. These are the same integrated LEDs that are used in our new fancy DotStar strips just really small.

Arranged in an 8x8 matrix, each pixel is individually addressable: like NeoPixels, DotStar LEDs have an embedded microcontroller inside the LED. You can set the color/brightness of each LED to 24-bit color (8 bits each red green and blue). Each LED acts like a shift register, reading incoming color data on the input pins, and then shifting the previous color data out on the output pin. By sending a long string of data, you can control an 'infinite' number of LEDs. The PWM is built into each LED-chip so once you set the color you can stop talking to the disk and it will continue to PWM all the LEDs for you.

Wiring it up is easy: there are two 4-pad connection ports on the back. Solder wires to the input port (+5V GND ClockIn and DataIn) and provide 5VDC to the +5V and ground pins, then connect the CIN/DIN pin to your microcontroller. If you have hardware SPI, use the SCK and MOSI pins respectively. You'll also need to make a common ground from the 5V power supply to the microcontroller/Arduino. Since each LED can draw as much as 40mA (thats up to 2.5 Amps per panel if all LEDs are on bright white!) we suggest our 5V 2A power supply if you're going to use full brightness and a lot of white. For most uses, you'll see about 0.5A of current per panel, and you can set the brightness to drop that down. Note that so much current through a small board can make it toasty!

To keep the board small, we did not put any small surface-mount capacitors on the front. Instead, there's a power/ground pad set on the back and a 220uF capacitor that you can solder onto the back for a compact fit. There's also four mounting holes that you can use for attachment, or snap them off with pliers if you want a perfect 1" square.

Check out our tutorial showing wiring, power usage calculations, example code for usage, etc!

Technical Details

Revision History:

As of April 29, 2018 we have updated to use a new version of the APA102-2020 LEDs with a different brightness curve - you may notice the LEDs are dimmer (but consistantly so). So we recommend you pretty much just set all three channels to the same value, ranging from (0, 0, 0) to (255, 255, 255) to change the brightness of the three UV LEDs inside each 5mm x 5mm package.

Technical Details

UV LED Datasheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0734/2961/4819/files/adafruit-neopixel-uv-led-strip-with-32-ledm-white-pcb---1m_1.jpg?v=1787258011
adafruit-neopixel-led-strip-w-alligator-clips-60-ledm-05-meter-long-black-flex
Adafruit NeoPixel LED Strip w/ Alligator Clips - 60 LED/m (0.5 Meter Long - Black Flex)

Adding glowy color to your projects has never been easier: no more soldering or stripping wires, clip 'em on and glow! This Adafruit NeoPixel LED Strip with Alligator Clips has 30 total LEDs in a "60 LED per meter" spacing, and is 0.5 meters long, in classy Adafruit Black. Its not too long, but has lots of glowing action. Perfect for use with a Circuit Playground, Circuit Playground Express, micro:bit or any other microcontroller board where you don't want to noodle with a breadboard and wires.

The strips come in a 0.5 meter reel with three 100mm long red/black/white alligator clips on the end. The other end is sealed. The alligator clips are even nicely color-coded: black for ground, white for signal, red for 3-5VDC power. We use SK6812 LEDs on these strips so you don't need an inline resistor and they work down to 3V logic+power.

NeoPixels are addressable LEDs. That means, there are 60 RGB LEDs per meter and the strip is half a meter long so you get 30 individually-controlled RGB LEDs! You can set the color of each LED's red, green and blue component with 8-bit PWM precision (so 24-bit color per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift-registers that are chained up down the strip so you can shorten the strip if you like by cutting it. Only 1 digital output pin are required to send data down. The PWM is built into each LED-chip so once you set the color you can stop talking to the strip, and it will continue to PWM all the LEDs for you

The strip is made of flexible PCB material, and comes in a weatherproof sheathing. You can cut this stuff pretty easily with wire cutters. Of course, you can also connect strips together to make them longer, just watch how much current you need! We have a 5V/2A supply that is able to drive this strip but chances are you will power these short strips direct from your microcontroller board. You must use a 3-5V DC power supply to power these strips, do not use higher than 6V or you can destroy the entire strip– yikes!

These LEDs use about 4.8 Watts max (~1 Amps @ 5V) per meter. The max rating is assuming all the LEDs are on full white, usually the actual current for colorful design is less than 1/3 of the max current. A good power supply is key!

Our detailed NeoPixel Uberguide has everything you need to use NeoPixels in any shape and size. Including ready-to-go library & example code for Arduino compatibles.
